Alex Ovechkin Sets Major NHL Record with His 50th Goal of the Season

Alex Ovechkin is no stranger to pushing boundaries and breaking records, and he did it again in the Washington Capitals’ game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night. The ice hockey winger scored his 50th goal of the season in this game, setting several major records along the way. This marks the ninth time that Ovechkin scored at least 50 goals in a single season, tying the record held by Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy. At 36, he’s also the oldest player to ever reach this milestone – but that’s not all! He also set the record for the most goals in a single season scored by a player aged 36 or older, passing Teemu Selanne's mark. He’s currently up to 780 career goals, behind Gordie Howe with 801 and Wayne Gretzky with 894 goals on the NHL’s list of all-time goal leaders. Despite his best efforts, the Knights defeated the Capitals 3-4, but it was a close call. Ovechkin was happy with the team’s performance and proud of his latest accomplishment. "Obviously it's pretty good company. Pretty happy. When you score first one you just feel pretty good about the game. I think our line today (felt) good and had pretty good chances," Ovechkin said after the game.
