Andrey Rublev Scores His First Masters 1000 Title in Monte Carlo

This year’s Monte-Carlo Masters was full of wild twists and turns, and the trophy eventually went to a pretty unexpected winner. Andrey Rublev defeated the Danish teen Holger Rune in three sets to win the first Masters 1000 title of his career. Rublev defeated Rune 5-7 6-2 7-5, but the match was unpredictable until the very last moment. The Danish player was leading the deciding set 4-1, but Rublev managed to save two break points before leveling the match and eventually winning it all. This marks Rublev’s first Masters 1000 title, following defeats in Monte Carlo and Cincinnati in 2021, which forced him to change his mindset and approach the game differently. “I remember the previous finals and when I was losing I thought I'd have no chance and mentally I was going down. But today I thought, 'just believe until the end', and this is what I was trying to do in the third set, hoping I would have an extra chance to come back and what a way to do it," said Rublev post-match. This year’s Monte-Carlo Masters was quite significant for the Russian player before he even lifted the trophy. He scored his 250th career win by defeating Jaume Munar, becoming the 25th active men’s player to cross this mark and only the fourth born after 1995 to do so.
