Auston Matthews Becomes First NHL Player in a Decade to Score 60-Season Goals

Auston Matthews led the Toronto Maple Leafs to another epic victory on Tuesday, and it was truly a night to remember. He scored two goals against the Detroit Red Wings, bringing his season total to 60 goals and setting several major milestones in the process. Matthews is the first NHL player since Steven Stamkos in 2012 to score 60 or more goals in a single season. He’s also the first US-born player and the first Leafs player to reach this milestone. Matthews joins Stamkos and Alex Ovechkin as one of three active players to reach 60-season goals in the past 25 years. To make things even more impressive, Matthews was the fastest among the three to reach 60 goals in a single season. It took him a total of 73 games, while Ovechkin and Stamkos played 76 and 82 games, respectively, before reaching their 60-goal milestones. Matthews described his latest milestone as “pretty special” and added that the reaction of his fellow teammates and the crowd made his history-making moment even more memorable. "It means a lot. Just how tight-knit we are in this locker room. It's like a family in there, a brotherhood, so it means a lot just to have their support and just the reaction from them, that's what it is all about," said Matthews after the game.
