Australia Beat Peru on Penalties to Reach the 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup is only a few months away, and the list of nations taking part is getting longer by the day. Australia became the 31st team to book their place in Qatar after defeating Peru on penalties in an inter-continental playoff on Monday night. The game between the two nations resulted in a 0-0 draw, but Australia eventually came out victorious in a shootout in extra time. They scored 5-4 on penalties, thanks to substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne. It was a shocker to see Redmayne being brought out to replace Mat Ryan in the final moments of the game, but Australia’s coach Graham Arnold said it was all part of a plan. "He's a very good penalty saver and I did something that could affect them mentally. They were probably asking themselves the question, 'Why is this guy being brought on, he has to be good'… It was a risk but it worked out," said Arnold. Arnold also added that he’s proud of the players for making it this far and truly committing themselves. Australia will be part of the Group D at the upcoming World Cup, alongside Denmark, Tunisia, and the reigning champions France. This marks their fifth World Cup in a row, having qualified every time since 2006.
