Australia Reaches First Davis Cup Final in Almost Two Decades

Its’ been almost two decades since Australia made it to the Davis Cup final, but their luck has finally changed. After defeating Croatia 2-1 in Malaga on Friday, Australia made it to their very first Davis Cup final since 2003 and they’ll have a chance to fight for the title on Sunday. Australia owes their latest win to Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson. The duo managed to beat Croatia's Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 6-7 (3-7) 7-5 6-4 in the semi-final match, and they’ll face either Italy or Canada in the final on Sunday. Lleyton Hewitt, captain of the Australian team, was thrilled to witness the duo’s triumph and praised them for helping the team reach this historic finale. “It’s been a long time – we’re a very proud Davis Cup nation and I’m just thrilled for these boys. They deserve to go out there and get a chance to play in a final – and now it’s going to happen on Sunday,” said Hewitt after the match. Australia hasn’t made it to the Davis Cup final since 2003 when they defeated Spain to win the title. Despite their recent run of bad luck, Australia is the second most successful team in the Davis Cup history behind the United States.
