Canada Beat Australia to Win Their First Davis Cup

Canada came into this year’s Davis Cup with zero titles under their belt, hoping their luck will finally turn in Malaga. Their face-off with Australia on Sunday resulted in an epic win, where they secured their very first trophy in the long Davis Cup history. The opening singles match between Denis Shapovalov and Thanasi Kokkinakis ended with a 6-2 6-4 win for the Canadian side. Shapovalov’s Canadian teammate Felix Auger-Aliassim then met up with Alex de Minaur, and scored an easy 6-3 6-4 win against the Australian player, giving his country a 2-0 lead. The Davis Cup marks the end of an amazing season for Auger-Aliassim, who’s currently Canada’s highest-ranked ATP player at no. 6. "The emotions are tough to describe. All of us here - we've dreamed of this moment. It's really a dream come true… We all developed as players individually... We're more ready for these type of moments but it's never easy to pull through,” said Auger-Aliassime post-match. This marks the first Davis Cup victory for Canada in over a century, as they’ve been competing in the tournament since 1913. They only came close to winning this contest back in 2019 but eventually lost the final match to Spain.
