Canada Eliminates Defending Champions Spain from Basketball World Cup

The second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup concluded on Sunday night and delivered several shockers that we didn’t see coming. The face-off between Spain and Canada was one of the biggest thrillers of the tournament so far, and it led to Spain’s shocking elimination from the tournament. Spain entered the FIBA Basketball World Cup as the reigning champion, but they struggled to stay on top of their game in the second round. After losing to Latvia in their previous game, they fell to Canada on Sunday and ended their Basketball World Cup run with this unexpected 85-88 loss. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished the game as the top scorer with 30 points and said that they entered the game knowing what was at stake, adding were willing to do whatever it took to win it. Canada’s head coach Jordi Fernandez described the players as "the definition of a winning team", adding he wants to everyone to know that they’re knocking at the door and that they’re thirsty for more after this epic win. The face-off between Canada and Spain didn’t deliver Sunday's only shocking outcome. Team United States ended up losing their first game of the tournament so far to Lithuania, but still made it to the quarter-finals, where they’ll face Italy.
