Chris Bassitt Signs 3-Year, $63 Million Deal with Toronto Blue Jays

After just a year with the New York Mets, Chris Bassitt is ready to move on. One of the most consistent pitchers in the MLB found a new home with the Toronto Blue Jays, after signing a three-year deal reportedly worth $63 million. Despite the Mets’ hopes that Bassitt will stick around in New York, the 34-year-old was seeking the deal that makes the most sense as he entered free agency. Bassitt was earning $8.65 million in 2022 with the Mets, with a $19 million option or a $150,000 buyout for the 2023 season, but he decided to move on. “Is a one-year evaluation of yourself worth it compared to a multi-year deal for this evaluation? I would say, not to give it away, it’s kind of easy,” Bassitt explained on The Chris Rose Rotation podcast when discussing her decision to elect free agency. This might as well be the last big multi-year contract of his career, so Bassitt tried to play his cards right and wait for the deal that works for him. The Blue Jays eventually decided to make him a part of their roster, cashing out the third-highest yearly salary among free agent pitchers, behind Jacob deGrom and Justin Verlander.
