Cincinnati Reds’ Jonathan India Named as MLB’s Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year Award is one of the biggest honors that rising MLB stars can be bestowed with, and Jonathan India is the latest baseball player to take it. The Cincinnati Reds infielder made history as the first player on his team to pick up this honor in over two decades. India follows in the footsteps of Scott Williamson, who was named the Rookie of the Year Award all the way back in 1999. He received 29 of 30 first-place votes to earn the title and was followed by the Miami Marlins pitcher Trevor Rogers, who received the only remaining first-place vote. India was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the fifth overall selection in the 2018 MLB draft and made his major league debut earlier this year. He always aspired to be crowned as the Rookie of the Year, and eventually managed to become the Reds’ eighth player to do so. “That was the one thing that stuck to me before I started the year was, ‘You know what, I am going to win Rookie of the Year this year.’ I said it in interviews. I just had a feeling that’s was what I wanted, and I was going to accomplish it,” said India after the Cincinnati Reds legend Johnny Bench announced him as the winner.
