Cristian Javier Signs $64 Million Extension with Houston Astros

Cristian Javier has been with the Houston Astros since the very start of his MLB career, and he still hasn’t had enough. The Dominican baseball pitcher signed a five-year extension with the Astros, reportedly worth $64 million. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Javier’s new deal will have him earning just $3 million in 2023, in addition to a $2 million signing bonus, but his salary will grow in the years to come. He’ll collect $7 million in 2024, an additional $10 million in 2025, and go on to earn $21 million in the two final years of his contract. The Astros' new general manager Dana Brown described Javier as “an outstanding pitcher”, and said they’re really excited about signing him to a long-term deal. “We felt that he is the perfect candidate for this type of deal as a core piece of our rotation. This is in line with our vision to try to lock players up to sustain our success both now and in the future," said Brown in a statement. Javier has been with the Astros since his MLB debut in 2020, and his extension is Brown’s first significant deal since he joined the team as their new general manager. This extension buys out three of Javier's arbitration years and two years of free agency.
