Finland Beat Canada in Overtime to Win 2022 Ice Hockey World Championship

Canada came into the Ice Hockey World Championship as a clear favorite to take the trophy home, but 2022 simply wasn’t their year. Finland managed to win their first title on home ice and the fourth one overall after scoring an unexpected win over Canada in overtime. Olympic champions Finland took control as soon as the game kicked off, and they were holding a 3-1 lead late in the third period. It seemed like they were going to score an easy win, but the Canadians managed to make a comeback before eventually losing in overtime after Sakari Manninen scored the final goal for Finland. This victory comes shortly after Finland won gold at the Winter Olympics, and they join Sweden as one of only two countries to win Olympic and world titles in the same year. Finnish coach Jukka Jalonen said they’re very proud of their achievement, but they’re still waiting for the news to sink in. “It’s unbelievable. You can’t even understand what has happened. Maybe in the summer, we can figure out what really happened. But three months and two gold medals – it’s unbelievable!” said Jalonen. The 2022 IIHF World Championship took place between May 13 and May 29 in Finland, with Tampere's Nokia Arena serving as the tournament’s main venue.
