Iga Swiatek Reclaims No. 1 Ranking After Winning WTA Finals

Iga Swiatek dealt with many ups and downs throughout 2023, but she’ll end the year on a high note. The Polish tennis player defeated Jessica Pegula to win the WTA Finals and she’ll officially end the season at no. 1 in the women's rankings. Swiatek has been on top of her game since the very start of this tournament, and we’ve seen her defeat several formidable opponents. She eventually faced the tournament’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, setting a meeting with Jessica Pegula in the tournament’s last match. Ironically enough, the final proved to be the easiest one to win. Pegula only won a single set against Swiatek, eventually suffering a humiliating 6-1, 6-0 defeat in just 59 minutes. The 22-year-old will return to no. 1 in the WTA rankings following this tournament, but this was never her priority. She was doubting she could repeat the success of her 2022 season after facing many ups and downs this year, but she’s proud of her success. "Coming back to world no. 1, it's a dream come true for sure. I would say I wasn't expecting that right now this season. I was kind of hoping that maybe next year is going to be my year. It seems like I'm just working hard and focusing on the right things and work,” said Swiatek.
