Islam Makhachev Defeats Charles Oliveira to Win Lightweight Title at UFC 280

The showdown between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira was one of the most highly-anticipated fights at the UFC 280. Makhachev faced Oliveira for the vacant UFC Lightweight Championship title and walked away with the belt by the end of the night. Makhachev was dominating the fight from the get-go, taking Oliveira down multiple times before delivering the final blow. He ended Oliveira's magical 11-win run with an arm triangle chock in the second round, after knocking down his opponent with a punch. Makhachev’s victory was quite emotional, both for him and his coach and former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev was previously coached by his late father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who passed away in 2020, and he dedicated this victory to him. "Abu Dhabi, thank you. I trained so hard for this moment. All my life I have prepared for this moment. I just want to say this belt is for my coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Many years ago he told me I'm going to be champion,” said Makhachev post-match. UFC 280 took place this Saturday at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The fight between Makhachev and Oliveira was the main event, but we also saw Aljamain Sterling retain his bantamweight title against TJ Dillashaw.
