Justin Herbert Signs Record $262.5 Million Extension with Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert has proven to be a valuable asset for the Los Angeles Chargers since joining them three years ago, and he’s not going anywhere. The star quarterback signed a lucrative five-year extension with the Chargers, reportedly worth $262.5 million. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Herbert’s new deal will include up to $218.7 million in guarantees and contains a no-trade clause. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Herbert is expected to earn $100 million in the first year of his new contract, which comes with an average annual salary of $52.5 million – the highest in NFL history. Even before signing this super-deal, Herbert didn’t seem too concerned about his future. He told CBS Sports' Jeff Kerr that he enjoyed playing football in Los Angeles, adding it’s been a great opportunity to join the Chargers. "I love that I was drafted here and that I have been able to play here. I think we're doing all the right things. I believe in the staff, all the teammates, the front office. So all I can do is hope for the best. It's out of my control, but I'll keep playing football," said Herbert back in June. Justin Herbert was drafted by the Chargers as the sixth overall pick in 2020 and became their starting quarterback in the second game of his rookie year.
