Kris Letang Signs 6-Year Extension with Pittsburgh Penguins

Kris Letang has been with the Pittsburgh Penguins since the very start of his NHL career, and he’s not going anywhere. The 35-year-old ice hockey player signed a six-year extension with his current team, reportedly worth $36.6 million. Letang was slated to become an unrestricted free agent and test the open market when free agency opens on July 14, but he decided to stay where he is instead. His new contract has an average annual value of $6.1 million and runs through the 2027-28 season. General manager Ron Hextall released an official statement announcing Letang’s new contract and said they’re thrilled to make him a Penguin for life. "Kris epitomizes what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin. The role he plays on our team is irreplaceable, he is a leader in our locker room, and has made countless contributions to the organization over the last 15-plus years,” said Hextall. The Penguins selected Letang in the third round of the 2005 NHL Draft, and it didn’t take him long to rise through the ranks. He won his first Stanley Cup with the team in 2009, followed by two more wins in 2016 and 2017. With 650 points scored during his time with the Penguins, he ranks fifth in the team’s history, in addition to ranking third among all NHL defensemen.
