Leon Edwards Knocks Out Kamaru Usman to Win the Welterweight Title

The UFC 278 gave us many wild matches, but the showdown between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman was the one that everyone was waiting for. Edwards made history when he knocked out Usman in the fifth round to win the UFC Welterweight Championship. Edwards used this fight as a chance to avenge his defeat to Usman in 2015, effectively ending his 15-fight unbeaten streak. He was behind on points in the fifth round but managed to deliver an epic head kick in the final minute, knocking Usman out and scoring an unexpected victory. Edwards’ triumph was quite historic since he became the first Jamaican-born UFC champion. He’s also only the second British champion to win the title and the first since Michael Bisping in 2016 to win a UFC Championship. Edwards entered this fight as a major underdog, and his victory is a crowning jewel of his career as a fighter, a career he turned to escape personal tragedies and Birmingham's gang culture. “I'm from the trenches. I'm built like this. I've been doubted my whole life but look at me now… All week I felt like this is my moment, everything in the past, the two years, the pandemic, look at me now, I'm champion of the world,” said Edwards after winning his title.
