Leylah Fernandez Leads Canada to Their First Billie Jean King Cup Victory

Team Canada spent six decades waiting to lift the trophy at the Billie Jean King Cup, and their wait is finally over! The 21-year-old Leylah Fernandez helped her country win the prestigious WTA tournament for the very first time with a pivotal victory against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini. Named after the tennis legend and former world no. 1 Billie Jean King, this tournament is one of the most significant international team competitions in women's tennis. It was launched under the name Federation Cup in 1963, and it celebrated its 60th anniversary this year. The 2023 Billie Jean King Cup finals were played in Seville, Spain between November 7 and 12, with Switzerland, Australia, Spain, and France entering the tournament as top seeds. They were joined by the Czech Republic, Germany, Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovenia, United States, but none of these teams could stand their ground to eventual finalists Canada and Italy. The former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez played a pivotal role in helping Canada secure their first Billie Jean King Cup win, after defeating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-3. "It feels amazing. I am extremely proud that I was able to represent Canada on the biggest stage. To do it in front of Billie Jean means the world to me, to us, and hopefully, we can keep going and celebrate tonight," said Fernandez following Canada’s historic win.
