Lionel Messi’s Future with PSG Uncertain After He Refuses 25% Pay Cut

Lionel Messi is one of Paris Saint-Germain’s shiniest stars, but his days with the French club seem to be numbered. The Argentina superstar most likely won’t extend his deal with PSG after reportedly refusing to take the 25% pay cut. Messi’s current contract will expire at the end of June, but he can choose to spend an additional 12 months at the club per the original deal. Given that no progress over an extension has been made so far, Messi’s future with PSG looks pretty bleak. To add fuel to the fire, sources close to the club told ESPN that PSG bosses want Messi to take a 25% pay cut from his existing salary. This amounts to €40 million gross a year, and the World Cup winner isn’t too enthusiastic about the potential wage reduction. After spending his entire career in Barcelona, Messi left in the face of the club’s financial troubles and joined PSG in 2021. After having some difficulty adjusting during the first season, he quickly regained form and scored his 700th senior career club goal with PSG. If Messi’s deal with PSG falls through, several clubs already expressed interest in him, including his former club Barcelona and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
