Mick Schumacher Joins Mercedes as Reserve Driver in 2023

Mick Schumacher, the son of the Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, is paving his own way in the world of racing. The 23-year-old just joined Mercedes as their reserve driver for the upcoming season behind Lewis Hamilton or George Russell. Schumacher kicked off his Formula 1 career with Haas and stayed there for two seasons, but they recently dropped him for Nico Hülkenberg. He also served as a reserve driver for Ferrari last season but started looking for a new home after they ended their collaboration. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was happy to welcome him on board, saying Schumacher is a talented young driver and they’re delighted to have him join the team. “He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach, and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver… He will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise," said Wolff in a statement. Schumacher echoed his words, saying he’s committed to giving it his all to contribute to Mercedes’ performance if he ever needs to step in for Hamilton or Russell. By joining Mercedes, he’s continuing his father’s legacy, who drove for this team after returning to Formula 1 in 2010 and went on to retire two years later.
