Mikaela Shiffrin Sets Major World Cup Record with Her 86th Win

Mikaela Shiffrin spent her entire career breaking records, and she just managed to set the most important one yet. She scored her 86th victory in Friday's giant slalom in Are, Sweden, equaling the all-time record for most World Cup wins. Shiffrin has been on fire since the start of the season, and she scored her latest big win after finishing 0.64 seconds ahead of Italy's Federica Brignone. This marks her 12th World Cup win of the season, and that number could rise during a slalom race on Saturday. Shiffrin kicked the year off by breaking the record for the most World Cup wins by a female alpine skier, surpassing fellow American Lindsey Vonn. She skied into her latest race with a ski that had the words “86 victories” written on it, fully aware she was on the cusp of breaking Ingemar Stenmark's all-time record. Shiffrin described her win as “pretty spectacular” and addressed Stenmark following her victory, saying she’s proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Swedish icon. "Maybe I get the 87th victory, maybe not. For me, the biggest dream is to be mentioned in the same sentence as you. It’s pretty special who you are and who you were as a ski racer and what you achieved as a human. That’s been the most inspiring thing," said Shiffrin.
