Pittsburgh Penguins First Team to Score 11 Goals in Salary-Cap Era

The Pittsburgh Penguins are no strangers to demolishing their opponents, but they took things to a whole new level against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. They scored a confident 11-2 win, becoming the first NFL team in the salary-cap era to score 11 goals in a single game. Evgeni Malkin was one of the players leading the team to this epic victory by scoring a total of three goals. This brings his career total of hat-tricks to 13, which marks the second-most among active NHL players. The Penguins’ coach Mike Sullivan had nothing but words of praise for Malkin, who managed to score 16 goals in 30 games after making a comeback following an offseason knee surgery. "When he's at his best, he's one of the few players that can take a game over and we're fortunate we have a couple of them on our team. He's a generational talent, he and [Crosby]. In my mind, Geno is one of the greatest players of all time," said Sullivan. This marks the first time that the Penguins scored 11 goals in a single game since 1993. They’re also the first team to reach this number in the salary-cap era, and the first to do it in almost two decades, following the Washington Capitals, who beat the Florida Panthers 12-2 in 2003.
