Rory McIlroy Takes the Lead as 2022 PGA Championship Kicks Off

The 2022 PGA Championship kicked off this Thursday at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Rory McIlroy came out swinging! The four-time major champion was on the top of his game during the first day and managed to take a one-shot lead. Northern Ireland's golfer is looking forward to making a comeback at this tournament, and his chances are looking pretty good so far. He finished the first day in the lead, after making four birdies in his first six holes on his way to a five-under 65. McIlroy is a two-time winner of the PGA Championship, but he hasn’t won the tournament ever since 2014, and this is his chance to end the eight-year drought. "Overall, it was a great day. Great to get off to a great start at a major championship for a change. I came in here knowing my game is in good shape so it is a matter of executing the shots you know you can - I need to replicate that and not get ahead of myself," said McIlroy. The 2022 PGA Championship is taking place from May 19 to May 22, without the defending champion Phil Mickelson, who decided to withdraw and miss the tournament for the first time since 1992.
