Sean Murphy Signs 6-Year $73 Million Deal with Atlanta Braves

It’s only been a few weeks since Sean Murphy was traded to the Atlanta Braves, and it seems he’s determined to make a home there. The Gold Glove Award winner signed a six-year deal with his new team, reportedly worth $73 million. Murphy’s new deal cements his future with the Braves and delays his eventual free agency by at least two years. He’s the latest Braves star to forge arbitration and free agency in favor of a lucrative contract – and this one includes a $15-million club option for 2029 with no buyout. This news comes shortly after Murphy was traded to the Braves from the Oakland Athletics, where he spent his first three MLB seasons. He was a part of a three-team trade, which also saw pitchers Kyle Muller and Freddy Tarnok, catcher Manny Piña, and minor league pitcher Royber Salinas be traded from the Braves to the Athletics. According to Athletics general manager David Forst, Murphy wasn’t shocked to hear about the trade and they parted ways on good terms. "I had a really nice conversation with Sean, actually. He was not surprised that he got traded, but surprised to be hearing from me today about where the landing spot was. In general, he was sort of very reflective and appreciative of his time here,” said Forst.
