Serena Williams Scores First Singles Win in Over a Year in Toronto

The National Bank Open is in the full swing right now, and Serena Williams is one of the players in the running for the title. Her first match in Toronto went pretty well, and she scored her first singles win in 14 months to reach the second round. Williams was on top of her game while playing her first match in Toronto against Spain's Nuria Parrizas Diaz. She scored an easy 6-3 6-4 win over the world no. 57, marking her first singles win since the 2021 French Open. Williams made her comeback to professional tennis at Wimbledon back in June. Despite being eliminated in the very first round, she decided to keep going. "I guess there's just a light at the end of the tunnel… I can't wait to get to that light. I love playing, so it's amazing but, you know, I can't do this forever. Sometimes you just want to try your best to enjoy the moments and do the best that you can,” said Williams. The 2022 National Bank Open is taking place between August 8–14, and Williams will either face Belinda Bencic or Tereza Martincova in the next round. This tournament serves as a warm-up for the US Open, so it’s highly likely she’ll take part in her home Grand Slam.
