Sporting Events Across the UK Postponed in the Face of Queen Elizabeth’s Death

The news of Queen Elizabeth’s death took the world by storm last evening, and the organizers of major sporting events across the UK are taking steps to honor the late royal. Several football, horse racing, golf, and other events have been postponed to pay tribute to Her Majesty. Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8 at the Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, aged 96. She reigned the United Kingdom for over 70 years, and messages of condolence poured in from around the world following her death – some of them coming from the major sporting governing bodies. Most notably, the English Football League postponed two matches set to take place on Friday, and there’s a chance that the weekend’s Premier League matches will suffer the same faith. The PGA Championship at Wentworth has also been postponed out of respect for the royal family. The Tour of Britain called off its weekend stages, while Premiership Rugby Cup and Scottish Rugby also canceled several games. Her Majesty has been an avid fan of horse racing throughout her life, and several horse racing events have been called off on Thursday to honor her. The British Horseracing Authority released an official statement following the Queen’s passing, and described her as “one of the greatest and most influential supporters in the history of horse racing.”
