UEFA Awards: Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema Wins Player of the Year

This past season was one for the books for Karim Benzema, and the UEFA Awards voters were definitely paying attention. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, and Real Madrid’s striker picked up the award for Player of the Year. Benzema was joined by Carlo Ancelotti, who was crowned as UEFA's Manager of the Year. He led Real to its record-extending 14th Champions League title last season and had nothing but words of praise for his star player. “Karim is not only a fantastic striker, he is a fantastic footballer with a great attitude. This year, he improved his knowledge. His leadership... he is a strong leader in the dressing room… We are lucky to have Karim," said Ancelotti in his speech. Ancelotti is one of the people that Benzema mentioned in his own speech, saying he wouldn’t have won this award if it wasn’t for him. He also pointed out the match against Paris Saint-Germain as the crucial moment of the past season, which gave the team great confidence. Alexia Putellas, a member of the Spanish national team who plays for Barcelona, received the trophy for UEFA Women’s Player of the Year. Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch football manager who led the England women's national team to their first title at the 2022 UEFA Women's Euro was crowned women’s coach of the year.
