Ukraine One Step Close to World Cup After Surprising Win Against Scotland

Ukraine entered their latest World Cup match as a clear underdog, but they somehow managed to defy all the odds. The Ukrainian team stunned Scotland and made it to the World Cup play-off final against Wales after the unexpected win on Wednesday night at Hampden Park. Andriy Yarmolenko’s opener 33 minutes into the game gave Ukraine hope they could win this match, and things only got better from there. They finished the game with a 3-1 lead, after Artem Dovbyk’s final goal in stoppage time sealed the deal. This victory comes amid ongoing turmoil in Ukraine, as the country continues fighting against attacks from Russia, and the team’s head coach, Oleksandr Petrakov, dedicated their latest triumph to their country and the troops fighting to defend it. “This is a huge win for Ukraine. It was a team effort. It was a team victory. They did everything for the people they play for. They play for Ukrainians, for people watching back home, for members of our armed forces in trenches or in hospitals,” said Petrakov. Following this win, Ukraine is one step closer to the World Cup, but they’ll have to defeat Wales on Sunday to make it to the next stage.
