Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Crowned as Home Run Derby Winner

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. came into this year’s Home Run Derby determined to take the trophy home, and that’s exactly what he did! Toronto Blue Jays superstar was crowned as the king of Home Run Derby with finals-record 25 bombs. Vladdy clinched his first career derby title at T-Mobile Park in Seattle after surviving a late charge from Tampa Bay Rays’ Randy Arozaren. He hit a finals-record 25 homers to secure his title and ultimately defeated Arozarena 25-23 in the last round. This victory is somewhat of a full-circle moment for Guerrero Jr. since he’s not the first person in his family to lift the HR Derby trophy. His father Vladimir Guerrero won the 2007 derby while with the Los Angeles Angels, beating the Blue Jays’ Alex Rios 3-2 in the final. Vladdy was just eight when his father won the crown in San Francisco. The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman admitted he doesn’t remember much of his father’s big moment because he was just eight at the time, but that doesn’t change the fact how historic this moment was. They become the first father-son to be crowned Home Run Derby champions. The older Guerrero late took to Twitter to congratulate Vladdy, tweeting, “What a performance! Proud of you son.”
