World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz to Miss Australian Open with Leg Injury

Carlos Alcaraz was one of the front-runners at this year’s Australian Open, but he decided to opt out of the tournament. The current world no. 1 will miss the first Grand Slam of the year after sustaining a leg injury in pre-season training. Alcaraz was supposed to appear at the Kooyong Classic next week before taking part in the Australian Open, but he decided to cancel his trip to the Down Under. He took it to Instagram to announce his withdrawal, explaining that he picked up a right leg injury through a chance, unnatural movement in training. “I'd worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately, I won't be able to play the Care A2+ Kooyong or the Australian Open. It's tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward. See you in 2024, Australian Open,” wrote Alcaraz. Alcaraz made history when he reached no. 1 last year, becoming the youngest and first teenager in history to finish the year atop the ATP rankings. He largely owes his no. 1 ranking to his victory at the 2022 US Open, where he defeated Casper Rudd to become the youngest US Open champion since Pete Sampras in 1990.
