Wu Yibing Makes History as the First Chinese Man to Win ATP Title

The Dallas Open wrapped up this weekend and it was quite historic for Wu Yibing. The 23-year-old player became the first Chinese man to ever win an ATP title after defeating John Isner and went on to become the highest-ranked Chinese player in ATP history. It took just under three hours for Yibing to beat Isner, but he eventually won 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (14-12). It was an unpredictable game until the very last moment, and Isner even held a championship point in the second set, but Yibing managed to make a comeback during the nerve-wracking tie-break in the third and final set. Yibing will rise to world no. 58 following his victory in Dallas, and this will make him the highest-ranking Chinese player in the history of ATP rankings. “I made history here for my country and for my home. I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support me. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys,” said Yibing in his acceptance speech. Yibing’s victory is extra satisfying because comes after a long hiatus for the 23-year-old player. He took a break from tennis between 2019 and 2022 due to numerous injuries and became the first Chinese man in the Open Era to qualify at the US Open upon his return last year.
