Canada Retains Top Spot in World Cup Qualifying After Defeating Honduras

Canada is one of the strongest candidates for the World Cup title in Qatar, and they continued their domination on Thursday. After a commanding 2-0 victory over Honduras, the Canadian team retained the top spot in 2022 World Cup qualifying. Canada was going strong since the very start of the match, and an epic opener by Denil Maldonado in the first half left Honduras fighting for control. The comeback they desperately needed never came, as Jonathan David led Canada to the 2-0 win in the 73rd minute. Canada is one step closer to Qatar, and they’re leading the eight-team final round with 19 points after going unbeaten for nine matches. Coach John Herdman couldn’t be prouder of their performance and he believes it perfectly embodied the team's spirit. "To get a 2-0 on the road was important for the team, to get our first win on the road, as well. More than anything, it was just about three points — that's all it comes down to. We bent a little bit, but we didn't break,” said Herdman after the match. Canada is set to face the second-placed United States in Hamilton, Ontario, on Sunday. The US also played their latest match on Thursday and managed to score a 1-0 win over El Salvador.
