Formula 1 Season Reduced to 22 Races, Russian GP Won’t Be Replaced

The Russian Grand Prix was one of countless sporting events taking place in Russia canceled this year, and Formula 1 won’t be trying to replace it. The 2022 Formula 11 calendar has been reduced to 22 races instead of 23 in the face of this decision. The Russian Grand Prix, taking place at the Olympic Park in Sochi since 2014, was supposed to return to this city in September. The F1 representatives announced their decision to cancel the race and terminate the contract with the Russian Grand Prix back in February, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the months that followed, F1 considered adding another race in Qatar or Singapore, but these plans eventually fell through. Instead of adding another Grand Prix to the calendar to fill the empty spot, the race for the 2022 Formula One World Championship will now consist of 22 races instead of the originally planned 23. The next race on the calendar, the Spanish Grand Prix, is set to return to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló on May 22. The defending champion Max Verstappen is one of the favorites to win the title, following three Grand Prix victories this season. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is his strongest competition, after winning the Bahrain Grand Prix and Australian Grand Prix.
