Lionel Messi & Pep Guardiola Among FIFA Football Awards Honorees

Another FIFA Football Awards are behind us, and the list of this year’s winners is as impressive as it gets. The Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi and Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola were among the honorees at this year’s ceremony, which took place in London on Monday. Despite making a move from Paris Saint-Germain to Inter Miami and no longer playing in the big leagues, Lionel Messi managed to pick up the trophy for the best FIFA men's player of the year. He defeated tough competition in Man City’s Erling Haaland and his former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappé. Messi and Haaland both received 48 points, but Messi eventually won the award on the basis of the votes cast by the men's national team captains, as per the Rules of Allocation. Pep Guardiola was voted the best FIFA men’s coach, which doesn’t come as a huge shocker following Man City’s historic treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League last season. The list of winners at this year’s FIFA Football Awards also included Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmatí (best FIFA women's player), Man City’s Ederson (best FIFA men’s goalkeeper), Manchester United’s Mary Earps (best FIFA women's goalkeeper), and England team’s Sarina Wiegman (best FIFA women's coach).
