Lucas Giolito Signs $38.5 Million Deal with Boston Red Sox

2023 has been a pretty rocky year for Lucas Giolito, but he’s ending it on a high note. After switching several teams throughout the past year, Giolito found a new home in Boston after signing a two-year, $38.5 million deal with the Red Sox. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Giolito’s new deal comes with an $18 million salary in 2024 and a $1 million buyout if he opts out. If he decides to stick around in Boston, his salary will rise to $19 million in 2025. The deal also includes a conditional option for 2026, which comes with some pretty specific terms. Giolito will get a $14 million club option if he throws under 140 innings in 2025, plus a $19 million mutual option for 140+, with a $1.5 million buyout. This marks the first major free-agent deal that the Red Sox signed since hiring a new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow in October. Signing a new contract with the Red Sox is a huge deal for Giolito, who had a pretty difficult season split between the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians. He’s been a reliable starter atop the White Sox rotation since joining the team in 2017, but his luck turned when they traded him to Angeles this summer.
