Sadio Mane’s Winning Penalty Leads Senegal to Their First AFCON Win

The Africa Cup of Nations final saw Senegal and Egypt go head to head, and the winner was difficult to call until the very last moment. After a series of missed chances, Senegal managed to win their very first AFCON final thanks to Sadio Mané’s winning penalty. Senegal’s chances were looking good at the very start of the game, but things went downhill after Mané missed a penalty seven minutes into the game. Both teams struggled to net any goals and had to settle the score with a penalty shootout, where Senegal won 4-2. Egypt’s chances were looking good because they have a better track record on penalties, and their goalkeeper Gabaski had already saved four penalties at the tournament. This time around, he ended up on the losing side as Mané led Senegal to the 4-2 victory with his winning penalty shot. What makes Senegal’s performance in Cameroon so impressive is the fact this marks their very first AFCON triumph. After two previous final defeats, it was magnificent to see them finally come out victorious at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations. "It just shows that if you work hard, if you persevere, you will get what you want. I am very emotional because the people of Senegal have wanted this trophy for 60 years," said Senegal’s coach Aliou Cisse.
