Spain Trashes Switzerland to Make it to Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals

The round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup is heating up, and the face-off between Spain and Switzerland was one for the books. The Spanish team stood their ground on Saturday and easily defeated Switzerland 5-1 to make it to the next round of the competition. Aitana Bonmati put the Spanish team ahead just five minutes into the game, but the score quickly equalized with Laia Codina’s own goal. This was a low moment for Spain, but they quickly made a comeback thanks to Bonmati, Codina, Alba Redondo, and Jennifer Hermoso who netted four more goals for their side, leading the team to the quarter-finals. With two goals scored for Spain, Aitana Bonmati was definitely the MVP of the game, and she said it felt good to make a comeback following their humiliating 4-0 loss to Japan. “Sometimes when you lose like the other day, it is a very hard blow. I think we should be proud of the work we have done. Right now what you see is a team, and you can see the personality of these players, and I hope we have many more days here,” said Bonmati. As for the rest of Saturday’s matches, Japan pulled a major upset against Norway. They sealed the quarter-final slot after defeating the Norwegian team 3-1, thanks to the epic goals by Risa Shimizu and Hinata Miyazawa in the second half.
